Author Guidelines

Indonesian Journal of Special Educational Needs (I-JOURSEN) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal that publishes original research and scholarly works in the field of Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Education.


Language Requirements

I-JOURSEN requires manuscripts to meet international standards of English to be considered for publication. Articles are normally published only in English.

Authors whose first language is not English are strongly encouraged to have their manuscripts professionally edited or proofread prior to submission. Language editing improves clarity and readability but does not guarantee acceptance.

Editorial decisions are based solely on the scientific quality, originality, and relevance of the manuscript.


Language Style

The default language style of I-JOURSEN is American English.
Authors who prefer British English must clearly indicate this preference on the first page of the manuscript.


Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

To maximize article discoverability, authors are advised to:

  • Include relevant keywords in the article title

  • Avoid excessively long titles

  • Select 3–5 keywords (minimum 3) combining general and specific terms

  • Use keywords naturally in the first two sentences of the abstract

  • Include keywords in Level-1 headings where appropriate


Title

  • Written in Title Case, centered

  • Font: Times New Roman, 14 pt, bold

  • Concise and informative

  • Avoid abbreviations and unnecessary words

  • Reflect the main findings or contribution of the study

Creative titles are permitted if academically appropriate. The editorial office reserves the right to revise titles for clarity and suitability.


Authors and Affiliations

  • Author names are written in full and separated by commas

  • Affiliations use superscript numbering and should follow this format:
    Institution/University, Country
    (e.g., Universitas Muhammadiyah Lampung, Indonesia)

  • Corresponding author(s) must be marked with an asterisk (*)

  • Provide a valid email address for the corresponding author below affiliations


Headings and Subheadings

  • Headings: Sentence case, Times New Roman 14 pt, bold

  • Subheadings: Capitalize Each Word, Times New Roman 12 pt, bold


Abstract

  • Maximum 250 words

  • Written in English

  • No citations or references

  • Minimize abbreviations

The abstract should include:

  1. Background of the study

  2. Research objectives

  3. Methods

  4. Main findings

  5. Conclusions


Keywords

  • Provide 3–5 keywords

  • Separated by semicolons

  • Avoid repeating words already in the title


Manuscript Text

  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt

  • Single-spaced

  • One blank line between paragraphs

  • Page numbers and line numbers are required


Nomenclature

  • Avoid non-standard abbreviations

  • Define abbreviations at first mention

  • Abbreviations must appear at least four times

  • A list of abbreviations may be included before Acknowledgments


Manuscript Structure

For Original Research Articles, the recommended structure is:

Introduction

The Introduction should:

  • Present the research background and significance

  • Review relevant literature concisely

  • Identify research gaps or novelty

  • Clearly state research objectives and hypotheses

Avoid overly long literature reviews or subheadings in this section.


Method

The Method section should enable replication and include:

  • Research design

  • Population and sampling techniques

  • Instruments and data collection procedures

  • Data analysis methods

  • Validity and reliability strategies

  • Ethical considerations (especially for participants with special needs)


Results and Discussion

This section should:

  • Present results clearly using tables or figures where appropriate

  • Interpret findings in relation to research questions

  • Compare findings with previous studies

  • Discuss implications for special education practice

  • Acknowledge limitations

  • Suggest future research directions

Avoid repetition of results or excessive speculation.


Conclusion

The Conclusion should:

  • Summarize key findings succinctly

  • Emphasize significance and contribution

  • Avoid repeating the abstract

  • Avoid introducing new data or arguments

One well-developed paragraph is usually sufficient.


Figures and Tables

  • Must be original and unpublished

  • Clearly labeled and referenced in the text

  • Captions should be self-explanatory

  • Resolution: 300 dpi, RGB color mode

  • Accepted formats: TIFF, JPG, EPS


Acknowledgments

(Optional)
Used to acknowledge funding bodies, institutions, or individuals who contributed but are not listed as authors.


Author Contributions Statement

Required for all manuscripts.

Use author initials only, separated by commas.
Example format:
Conceptualization, AU; methodology, RS; analysis, AU; writing—original draft, RS; writing—review and editing, AU.

Place this section before References.


References

  • Use APA 7th Edition

  • All cited works must appear in the reference list and vice versa

  • Use reference managers such as Mendeley or Zotero

  • Include DOI or URL when available


Supplementary Materials

Supplementary files may include:

  • Data sets

  • Tables or figures

  • Audio or video materials

These files are not typeset and must be clearly labeled.


Ethical Considerations

Research involving human participants, especially individuals with special educational needs, must comply with ethical standards and include informed consent.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
 

Copyright Notice

The authors submitting a manuscript to Indonesian Journal of Special Educational Needs (I-JOURSEN) do so with the understanding that, if the manuscript is accepted for publication, the right of first publication of the article is granted to the journal as published by its designated publisher.

Upon acceptance, authors will be requested to complete and sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) or License Agreement, which will be provided electronically by the editorial office. Confirmation of manuscript acceptance and the copyright agreement form will be sent to the corresponding author via email.

Publication Ethics and Misconduct

Indonesian Journal of Special Educational Needs (I-JOURSEN) is a peer-reviewed academic journal. This statement outlines the ethical responsibilities of all parties involved in the publication process, including authors, editors, reviewers, the editorial board, and the publisher.

This journal follows the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.


Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication

The publication of articles in I-JOURSEN contributes to the development of a credible and respected body of knowledge in the field of Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Education. Peer-reviewed publications reflect the quality of research conducted by authors and supported by their institutions.

All parties involved in the publishing process are expected to adhere to the highest standards of ethical behavior.

The publisher of I-JOURSEN is committed to ensuring that editorial decisions are independent and not influenced by advertising, reprint, or other commercial interests.


Allegations of Research Misconduct

Research misconduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • Fabrication

  • Falsification

  • Citation manipulation

  • Plagiarism

When allegations of misconduct arise, the Editors and Editorial Board will follow COPE procedures to investigate the issue fairly and transparently.

Manuscripts found to contain misconduct will be rejected.

Published articles found to involve misconduct may be retracted, with a retraction notice linked to the original article.


Investigation Procedure

The investigation process includes:

  • Initial assessment of the allegation and potential conflicts of interest

  • Notification to the corresponding author for clarification and response

  • Evaluation of the response and, if necessary, consultation with independent experts

  • Editorial decision based on the findings

Institutions affiliated with the authors may be asked to conduct formal investigations when appropriate.


Screening for Plagiarism

All manuscripts submitted to I-JOURSEN are screened using plagiarism detection software (e.g., Turnitin or equivalent tools).

Manuscripts containing plagiarism or self-plagiarism will be immediately rejected.


Plagiarism Policy
