Peer Review Process

The manuscript will be sent to at least two anonymous referees for contribution, originality, relevance, and presentation (double-blind review). Reviewers' comments are then sent to the corresponding author for necessary actions and responses. The Editor shall inform you of the results of the review as soon as possible, hopefully in 30 to 60 days. The submitted manuscript is first reviewed by an editor. It will be evaluated in the office, whether it is suitable for the Journal on Mathematics Education focus and scope or has a major methodological flaw and similarity score.

The editor will run a plagiarism check using ithenticate.com (Web Checker) for the submitted articles before sending it to the reviewers. We do not process any plagiarised contents. If an article has over 20% of plagiarism based on the result of the check, we will send back the article to the author to be revised for the plagiarised contents. The journal is carried out by using Mendeley as a Tool Reference Manager. The language used in this journal is English.

The accepted research articles will be available online (free download) following the journal peer-reviewing process. The final decision of articles acceptance will be made by Editors according to Reviewers' comments. The articles sent back to the authors for revision should be returned to the editor without delay. The revised article returned later than 20 days will be considered as new submissions. The revised article can be sent to the editorial through the Online Submission Interface.

All articles published Open Access will be immediately and permanently free for everyone to read and download. We are continuously working with our author communities to select the best choice of license options, currently being defined for this journal as Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

The Journal invites original research articles and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The whole spectrum of research in mathematics education are welcome, which includes, but is not limited to the following topics:

  • Realistic Mathematics Education (RME)

Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) is a teaching and learning theory in mathematics education that was first introduced and developed by Freudenthal. Two of his important points of view are mathematics must be connected to reality and mathematics as a human activity. RME is implemented following three principles, they are: (1) guided reinvention and progressive mathematizing, (2) didactical phenomenology, and (3) self-developed model. Furthermore, the practice of RME also has its own characteristics, they are: (1) phenomenological exploration or the use of contexts, (2) the use of models or bridging by vertical instruments, (3) the use of students own productions and constructions or students contribution, (4) the interactive character of the teaching process or interactivity, and (5) the intertwining of various learning strands. A paper is eligible to be included in this topic if the paper accommodates these three principles and these five characteristics. The researches (ideas of research) on related topics can be traced to the works of Hans FreudenthalMarja van den Heuvel-PanhuizenK.P.E. Gravemeijer, and published books in Springer or other publishers.

  • Design/Development Research in Mathematics Education

Educational design research is perceived as the systematic study of designing, developing and evaluating educational interventions (programs, teaching-learning strategies, and materials, products, systems) as solutions to such problems. It also aims at advancing our knowledge about the characteristics of these interventions and the processes to design and develop them. Authors could submit their work, either a validation study or a development study in mathematics education, with a comprehensive description and analysis of every stage. The ideas of this research on related topics can be traced to the works of Jan Van den Akker, Koeno Gravemeijer, Susan McKenney, Nienke NieveenTjeerd PlompArthur Bakker, and published books in Taylor & Francis or other publishers.

  • PISA Task

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in member and non-member nations intended to evaluate educational systems by measuring 15-year-old school students' scholastic performance on mathematics, science, and reading. PISA tasks here refers to the mathematics tasks developed to measure mathematical literacy. It is an individual’s capacity to identify and understand the role that mathematics plays in the world, to make well-founded judgments and to use and engage with mathematics in ways that meet the needs of that individual’s life as a constructive, concerned and reflective citizens. A paper is eligible for inclusion in the PISA task if it provides a comprehensive analysis of the development or the use effect of the task considering the appropriate content, context, and process.

  • Mathematics Ability

Mathematics ability refers to the ability (a human construct) to obtain, to process, and to retain mathematical information (cognitive) and to solve mathematics problems (pragmatic). To maintain the focus of this journal, the scope of mathematics ability includes the following abilities: reasoning, connection, communication, representation, and problem-solving. A paper is eligible for this topic if it comprehensively discusses those abilities. The researches (ideas of research) on related topics can be traced to the works of Markku S. HannulaCERME ProceedingsICME Proceedings and published books in Springer or other publishers.

  • ICT in Mathematics Education

The advance of information and communication technology (ICT) has been the concern of all human life, including in education. When all students use technology, education must be the first one to utilize it for the sake of effectiveness and attractiveness. The researches (ideas of research) on related topics could be traced to the works of Paul DrijversWillem J. Pelgrum, Tjeerd PlompJean-Baptiste Lagrange, Michèle Artigue, Colette Laborde, Luc Trouche, and published books in Springer or other publishers.

  • Ethnomathematics

Ethnomathematics is the study of the relationship between mathematics and culture. In a deeper understanding, ethnomathematics refers to mathematics which is practiced by members of a cultural group who share similar experiences and practices with the mathematics that can be in a unique form. Culture gives diverse and interesting contexts in mathematics learning to be discussed. Therefore, the scope of ethnomathematics is an important part of the focus and scope of the journal. The ideas of this research on related topics can be traced to the works of Marcia AscherUbiratan d'AmbrosioRobert AscherMarcelo C. Borba, and published books in SpringerTaylor & Francis, or other publishers

Publication Frequency

Hipotenusa Journal of Research Mathematics Education (HJRME) [e-ISSN: 2723-486X & p-ISSN: 2621-0630] issues 2 times a year (February, and August) with the total 5 articles/issue.

Correction and Retraction

Hipotenusa Journal of Research Mathematics Education (HJRME) [e-ISSN: 2723-486X & p-ISSN: 2621-0630] takes its responsibility to maintain the integrity and completeness of the scholarly record of our content for all end users very seriously. Changes to articles after they have been published online may only be made under the circumstances outlined below. Hipotenusa Journal of Research Mathematics Education (HJRME) places great importance on the authority of articles after they have been published and our policy is based on best practices in the academic publishing community.

An Erratum is a statement by the authors of the original paper that briefly describes any correction(s) resulting from errors or omissions. Any effects on the conclusions of the paper should be noted. The corrected article is not removed from the online journal, but notice of erratum is given. The Erratum is made freely available to all readers and is linked to the corrected article.

A Retraction is a notice that the paper should not be regarded as part of the scientific literature. Retractions are issued if there is clear evidence that the findings are unreliable, this can be as a result of misconduct or honest error; if the findings have previously been published elsewhere without proper referencing, permission, or justification; if the work is plagiarized; or if the work reports unethical research. To protect the integrity of the record, the retracted article is not removed from the online journal, but notice of retraction is given, is made freely available to all readers, and is linked to the retracted article. Retractions can be published by the authors when they have discovered substantial scientific errors; in other cases, the Editors or Publisher may conclude that retraction is appropriate. In all cases, the retraction indicates the reason for the action and who is responsible for the decision. If a retraction is made without the unanimous agreement of the authors, that is also noted. In rare and extreme cases involving legal infringement, the Publisher may redact or remove an article. Bibliographic information about the article will be retained to ensure the integrity of the scientific record.

A Publisher's Note notifies readers that an article has been corrected subsequent to publication. It is issued by the Publisher and is used in cases where typographical or production errors (which are the fault of the Publisher) affect the integrity of the article metadata (such as title, author list, or byline) or will significantly impact the readers' ability to comprehend the article. The original article is removed and replaced with a corrected version. Publisher's Notes are freely available to all readers. Minor errors that do not affect the integrity of the metadata or a reader's ability to understand an article and that do not involve a scientific error or omission will be corrected at the discretion of the Publisher.

In such a case, the original article is removed and replaced with a corrected version. The date the correction is made is noted on the corrected article. Authors should also be aware that an original article can only be removed and replaced with a corrected version less than one year after the original publication date. Corrections to an article that has a publication date that is older than one year will only be documented by a Publisher's Note.

The following guideline may also be helpful: COPE Guidelines for Retracting Articles

Withdrawal of Manuscript

The author is not allowed to withdraw submitted or published manuscripts (unless there are compelling reasons), because the withdrawal is a waste of valuable resources that editors and reviewers spent a great deal of time processing submitted manuscripts and works invested by the publisher.

If the author still requests withdrawal of his/her manuscript the author will be asked to submit an "Article withdrawal Form" signed by all authors (or) the corresponding author of the manuscript stating the reasons for manuscript withdrawal. Authors must not assume that their manuscript has been withdrawn until they have received appropriate notification to this effect from the editorial office. Please contact hipotenusa@gmail.com for the "Article withdrawal Form".

However, it is unethical to withdraw a submitted or published manuscript from one journal if accepted by another journal.
